The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) is organizing national seminars on enhancing global competitiveness of Indian life sciences industry through the strategic use of patent system in New Delhi and Mumbai.
The New Delhi seminar is at FICCI on December 5-6, 2005. The event would take place at Hotel Intercontinental, Mumbai on December 9-10. The co-organizers of the seminars are the Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion, Ministry of Commerce and Industry and the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI).
The seminar is aimed to provide information on the role of intellectual property as a tool for development, and to impart appropriate knowledge and practical skills in the effective enforcement of intellectual property rights and how the role of the patent system can be a tool for the growth and success of the companies in these sectors.
In addition to prominent speakers from India Industry, senior WIPO officials and experts from the US and Europe, will be speaking at the seminar. On the second day of the seminar specialized workshops on patents and PCT and licensing and alternative dispute resolution will be organised.
The organizers stated that India has a large market for pharma and biotech-based products and is also emerging as a global leader in research and development in these domains. "Today life science inventions have become front-page news with each big breakthrough in this burgeoning field. It has therefore, become very important to create more awareness and understanding about the patenting of the inventions, and to reap the benefits for the inventors," organisers noted in a release.
